Chad Reed (Honda) has made a solid start to the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, finishing second behind all-the-way winner Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) in the opening round at Anaheim's Angel Stadium on January 7.
But the Aussie champ had to work hard in the final few laps after crashing on lap 14, allowing KTM’s Ryan Dungey a sniff of the runner-up spot.
But Reed was up to the task, finishing just over one-second ahead of Dungey, with Villopoto the victor by a whopping 12.223 seconds.
“This track was totally different to what we have tested on in the lead up to the start of the season,” Reed explained. “It really only had one line so was very hard to pass on.
“I struggled a little bit through practice but the guys made some aggressive changes to the bike before the heat race which really helped me.
“My starts were good and I was happy to get second tonight in this field of riders. I had a small tip over in the race; I was looking for new lines and lost the front.”
Justin Brayton (Honda), Jake Weimer (Kawasaki) and James Stewart (Yamaha) completed the top six.
Reed’s compatriot Brett Metcalfe (Suzuki) started his campaign in 11th, while in the West Coast Lites class Australian KTM duo Matt Moss and Ryan Marmont were 11th and 17th respectively. Honda’s Cole Seely was the winner.
Round two of the 17-round championship will be held on Saturday, January 14 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
