Chad Reed to fight for third World Supercross crown, as Melbourne secures three-year deal to host Aussie round of new-look world titles

Following on from news that Melbourne will host Round 2 of the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship, the Australian promoter of the new-look titles, SX Global, has announced that supercross and motocross legend Chad Reed will be coming out of retirement to contest the new series, where he’ll battle a host of other top-flight international talent.

Chad Reed made a big entrance at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium this morning, announcing his return to the FIM World Supercross Championship

At a media conference held this morning at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, it was confirmed that Marvel Stadium would not only host Round 2 of this year’s FIM World Supercross Championship, but that the venue has also been confirmed to host the Australian leg of the series in 2023 and 2024 as well.

Reed will be fighting for his third FIM World Supercross Championship crown in the premier 450cc category, and will be contesting the title with American supercross team, MDK Motorsports.

The 40-year-old will be joining a glittering cast of international racing talent, including Germany’s Ken Roczen, America’s Justin Brayton, Vince Friese, and Cole Seely, and British riders Dean Wilson and Max Anstie, along with competitors from France, Italy and Brazil, among others.

The Friday night will see the opening round of the FOX Australian Supercross Championship play out, with the Round 2 of the WSX to follow on the Saturday night. However, the best Aussie riders won’t only be battling it out for domestic championship honours – they’ll have a crack at securing a wildcard entry to mix it with the world’s best the following night too!

The intense on-track action will be supported by some epic freestyle motocross displays, pyrotechnics, and live performances by Peking Duk (Friday) and Bliss n Eso (Saturday).

Melbourne's Marvel Stadium last hosted the AUS-X Open supercross in 2019

“SX Global is thrilled that Melbourne has secured a round of the prestigious championship for the people of Victoria and Australasian fans for the next three years until 2024,” said SX Global’s President, Tony Cochrane.

“The future of supercross is on a global stage and for Melbourne to host a round of the championship adds to its impressive portfolio of major sporting events. We extend our gratitude to The Hon Minister Steve Dimopoulos [Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events] and the Visit Victoria team for recognising the vast potential and working with us to bring it to life.”

Reed said he was thrilled to be signing on for the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship.

“Opportunities like WSX don’t come along every day,” he said.

“Growing up in Australia, I have always enjoyed an opportunity to grab my passport, travel the world, and ride my dirt bike. After two years of retirement, I have a new perspective on racing at the highest level. I am beyond excited to get back on the bike, into the athletic mindset and ready to compete to win in October.

“I haven’t raced in Melbourne since 2019, so it’ll be an unbelievable experience to get back here in October and go up against the best current riders in the world. It’s going to be an epic experience competing for an FIM-sanctioned World Championship.”

With both Australia's and the world's best supercross riders set to do battle at Marvel Stadium this October, the sport is set to reach new heights in this country...
