Reed dominates in Texas

The Australian adds another conquest to his recent successes, this time in Texas as the AMA Motocross Championship continued with round two

Chad Reed’s run of sizzling form has continued, this time with a maximum points haul at round two of the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championship in Wortham, Texas on May 28.

After qualifying second on his Honda, Reed coasted to victory over Ryan Dungey in the opening 30-minute moto, and then made it a double when his arch-rival – on track to claim the honours – saw his hopes dashed when his Suzuki ran out of fuel.

Reed now leads the championship by 21pts (97 to 76) over Dungey, followed by Davi Millsaps (Yamaha, 72), Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto (69) and South Australia’s Brett Metcalfe (Suzuki, 64).

Metcalfe scored his first podium of the year in race two, 28 seconds behind Reed.

“The first moto was awesome,” Reed explained. “I was really patient, was able to put some good laps together and pull out to a comfortable lead.

“In moto two it was pretty much the same thing, just trying to put down some good laps and then unfortunately I crashed which cost me a lot of time. I was making ground but it wasn’t going to be enough to catch Ryan, but then he ran out of fuel, which allowed us to go 1-1.

“I saw him on the side of the track, which was a bummer for him. You don’t want to win like that, but I felt like I had the pace until I threw it away in that second one.”

Of the other Australians in Texas, Michael Byrne (Suzuki) produced 14-10 results, Tye Simmonds (KTM) 13-12 and Dean Porter (Suzuki) 21-18.

Round three will be held in Pennsylvania on Saturday, June 11.
