Reed cleans up in Super X

First Aussie title since 2000

The air of inevitability has reached its climax, with Suzuki's Chad Reed wrapping up the Australasian Supercross Championship - Super X - in Brisbane last Saturday night.

A huge crowd saw Reed easily win all four races in the Quadruple Sprint format, taking home his sixth maximum points haul from seven rounds.

The only rider capable of snatching the title from Reed in the final round, Yamaha's Jay Marmont, finished third in Brisbane, behind local star Dan Reardon (Honda). American Jeremy McGrath (Honda) and Cheyne Boyd (Yamaha) rounded out the top five.

"There is nothing like the experience of actually getting out there and racing against strong competition to prepare you for the season ahead," said Reed. "The tracks were on par with anything I've raced on in the US as well, it's been a very successful campaign and I'm glad to have started my relationship with Suzuki with a championship win on the RM-Z450.

"I have gained an advantage in that I've developed some strong race fitness - it's certainly going to help in the next few weeks as I undergo the last month of training ahead of Anaheim (the opening round of the 2009 AMA Supercross Championship)."

Reed has now won thee Aussie supercross titles in the Open class, the last one coming in 2000 before he relocated to Europe to compete in the world 250cc motocross title.

Since then, Reed has made cameos in Australia before returning to the championship full-time this year.

Reed finished the Super X title on 170pts, from Marmont (151), Boyd (115), McCoy (112) and Kawasaki's Troy Carroll (103).

In the Lites class, Suzuki's Matt Moss had already wrapped up the title in the penultimate round, and he failed to finish the 15-lap final in Brisbane, along with another regular front-runner, Luke George (Kawasaki).

It was a KTM quinella in the final, with Ryan Marmont the winner from factory teammate Tye Simmonds, although it was the latter who finished second overall in the championship behind Moss.

"I'm stoked to have taken my first win of the season at the final round of Super X, and it sealed my position for third overall in the Pro Lites Championship," said Marmont.  "I was feeling pretty calm and confident all night, so I knew I was going to be on the podium, but I didn't want to give myself any added pressure to have to win, so I just went out there with a clear mind and determination which worked in my favour.

"This was a great way to finish the series and part ways with Motorex KTM.  It was my mechanic Danny Apro's birthday at the final round, and I know my win was the best present he could have hoped for, so I'm stoked to have made his night."

US rider Chris Gosselaar (Kawasaki) rounded out the podium in Brisbane from another pair of KTM runners - Danny Anderson and Todd Waters.

Moss completed championship hostilities on 141pts from Simmonds (121), Marmont (119), Anderson (100) and Waters (92).

Super X will return in 2009, with a round planned in New Zealand. To keep an eye on what's planned, click here.
