Reed charges to overall at Spring Creek

Commading lead with five rounds remaining

Australia’s Chad Reed (Suzuki) has added a second overall 450cc AMA motocross win to his career tally with a dominant performance in Millville, Minnesota, last weekend.

Two near-perfect starts set up a pair of strong motos for the RM-Z450 pilot, who was second and first in the two 17-lappers.

In race one Reed finished just 1.738secs behind Yamaha’s Josh Grant, before the Aussie eased his way to a resounding 7.345sec triumph over Ivan Tedesco in the second outing.

The third sports were filled by Australia’s Michael Byrne (Suzuki) and Davi Millsaps (Honda) respectively.

“I felt great this weekend,” said Reed. “On Friday we had press day, which allowed me to get a good feel for the track and how the bike would respond.

“We’d spent the week off making some changes to the bike and immediately I could tell they were working.

“I felt confident and converted this to two good starts, which is so important. Josh (Grant) and I set the pace for most of the opening moto and although second was good, I felt I probably had a win in me.

“The second moto was much better. I felt good; I had energy in reserve and the changes we had made to the bike during the day made it awesome to ride.

“It was a great feeling to clear out and take the win, which also gave us the overall.

“I’m not there yet in terms of my health, but I certainly felt better. We’re working on a good program and I feel like I’m starting to see a light at the end of all this – fingers crossed.”

On the back of 10 podium finishes in 14 races, Reed now leads by 37pts (287 to 250) from Andrew Short Honda), followed by Tedesco (238), Grant (234), Byrne and New Zealander Cody Cooper (Yamaha, 157).

Cooper circulated to 12-8 finishes at the Spring Creek MX Park.

In the 250cc class, Brett Metcalfe scored a pair of fourths on his Honda, and also gained a championship spot – into third on 215pts behind runaway leaders Christophe Pourcel (Kawasaki, 299) and Ryan Dungey (Suzuki, 296).

Dungey and Pourcel took home the quinella in both races.

The championship continues at Washougal MX Park next weekend. In all there, are five rounds remaining.
