Reed begins MX season in fine style

The Australian has carried over his supercross form into the motocross arena as he began the American national title in the winner's circle

An in-form Chad Reed (Honda) claimed the overall honours in round one of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship in California last weekend (May 21-22).

The Australian, who only made an 11th hour decision to contest the championship, shared a win and second place with Suzuki hard-charger Ryan Dungey, but won on a countback following his higher finish in the second and final 30-minute moto.

The overall win was a continuation of the sizzling form that carried Reed through to second in the AMA supercross title, including a victory in the final round.

“That was definitely a great way to start the season,” Reed said. “We were better prepared than we were at the start of the supercross season and I am feeling the fittest I ever have.

“The bike really felt good out there. With the outdoors it normally it takes a few races to get going, but I can’t really fault anything today.

“It is going to be a tough season there are a lot of fast guys and they are going to step it up week after week. I had an absolute blast out there today -- so much fun -- and the win was an added bonus.”

Reed won the 450cc MX title in 2009, but sat out last year’s campaign with illness.

Three other Australians contested last week’s opener, with Brett Metcalfe – Dungey’s team-mate – making a solid start with 5-5 results, followed by Michael Byrne (Suzuki, 10-14) and rookie Tye Simmonds (KTM, 12-16).

Round two will be held in Wortham, Texas, this weekend.
