According to a report in Australian Motorcycle News, New South Wales looks set to be adopting a recreational registration scheme along the same lines as Victoria that could see dirt bikes allowed in certain off-road areas that would otherwise require full registration.
A collaborative effort between Rob Colligan of the Motorcycle Council of NSW and Rhys Griffiths, the motorcycle manager of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, has resulted in an ‘in principal’ agreement being reached to adopt the scheme, which now awaits ministerial sign-off.
If approved, AMCN is reporting that the scheme will cost riders approximately $120 for a 45-day permit, part of which will include compulsory third party insurance. Some of the fee will also be used to rehabilitate environmentally sensitive areas.
One manufacturer which will certainly welcome the annoucment is Suzuki, whose RMX450Z enduro bike is imported into Australia without ADR certification, which in effect puts it on the same level – as far as accessibility is concerned – as the RM-Z450 motocrosser.
