Rea poised for WorldSBK title No.4

Jonathan Rea enters French round poised to become first rider to win four consecutive World Superbike Championships

Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jonathan Rea has his first chance to clinch his fourth World Superbike Championship this weekend in Magny-Cours after a stunning run of form sees the Northern Irishman heading into this weekend’s 11th round with a 116-point advantage.

With six rounds left to run, if Rea can leave this weekend’s French round with a 100-point advantage over his nearest rival Chas Davies, then he’ll also be leaving with a shiny new World Championship trophy tucked under his arm.

Mathematically, Rea simply needs to collect 34 points during the two-race event, which means if he wins the opening race on Saturday, he only needs to roll around and finish in seventh place to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive WorldSBK crown. And when you consider the 31-year-old has already celebrated a dozen wins and the last six of them on the spin, the likelihood of him celebrating the title on Sunday is pretty high. And it was the scene of his third world title in 2017, after all.

And while Spanish sensation Ana Carrasco (DS union Team) had an opportunity last time out to wrap up the World Supersport 300 title, becoming the first woman in the world to ever win a world championship, her lacklustre results last time out now ensures she’s going to have to fought for it at this weekend’s WSSP300 season finale at Magny-Cours.

The Supersport World Championship looks like it will go all the way to the wire at Qatar’s Round 13. Just 16 points seperate the series leader Sandro Cortese (Kallio Racing) and Jules Cluzel (NRT), with both Randy Krummenacher and Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha) just another five points adrift.
