After over 12 years at the helm, Ray Newland will retire as the manager of the motorcycle division of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) on September 9.
Newland, 69, has called it a day to spend some more time with his wife and family, but he hasn’t discounted the possibility of doing some consultancy work in the motorcycle arena over the next couple of years.
Newland first started at the FCAI in 1997 after presenting his case to the motorcycle industry.
“I gained the position after… outlining the need for a person with motorcycling background to represent the views of the industry in dealings with state and federal government officials concerned with motorcycle registration, licensing and safety issues,” said Newland.
“Since then, the most rewarding part of the job has been working with the great team of senior motorcycle executives that make up the FCAI motorcycle group.”
“In 1997 there were only six member companies in the FCAI: Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, BMW and Harley-Davidson. Now there are 11 companies representing 15 brands of motorcycles and ATVs, plus the ASF (Australian Scooter Federation) representing 12 brands of scooters.
“This has led to a united industry representing 95 percent of the major motorcycle importers/distributors in Australia.”
Newland has identified a number of key achievements during his tenure:
• Representation on federal and state government motorcycle safety committees;
• The implementation of LAMS in every state and territory (except WA – anticipated soon);
• Developing the current sales data reporting system with ERG (Equipment Research Group);
• Developing co-operative relationship with the peak rider lobby group, the Australian Motorcycle Council
• Co-sponsoring the first ever Motorcycle and Scooter Safety Summit in 2008;
• Assisting with production of the successful “Ride On” safety DVD; and
• Production of “You and Your ATV” safety DVD.
Newland’s successor will be named shortly, and the Bikesales Network understands three Melbourne-based candidates have been shortlisted.
