In the face of proposed speed limit reductions on the Oxley Highway, incensed motorcyclists are banding together on Saturday, November 5, for the Save the Oxley Ride.
The Oxley Highway between Port Macquarie and Walcha has long been known as one of the best motorcycling routes in Australia, with the road following a serpentine course as it climbs from near sea level up and over the Great Dividing Range.
New South Wales' Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has already dropped the limit in some places on the route and was about to introduce a comprehensive raft of reductions elsewhere, until it received an online petition signed by around 6000 people opposed to the changes.
The lodging of the petition has only granted those opposed a momentary reprieve, however, with RMS set to look at the measures once more in December.
The online petition has been organised by local rider Ken Healey, who says he has another 1000 signatures on paper.
The November 5 protest ride, which will be conducted under the banner of the Motorcycle Council of NSW, will leave from Andrews Park on Cameron Street in Wauchope (9am assembly for a 10am departure) and beside Walcha Oval in Pakington Street, Walcha, behind the Royal Café (9am assembly for a 10am departure).
Both groups will converge on the Gingers Creek Roadhouse for an 11.30am rally meeting. Addressing the crowd will be Ken Healey, Christopher Burns (Chairman of the MCC of NSW), Toni Heaney (owner of the Walcha Royal Café), Ralph Clissold (owner of the Mount Seaview Resort) and at least one politician (still to be confirmed).
