A bold new two-stroke platform headlines a radical overhaul for the 2023 KTM SX motocross range, with new features and parts across the board.
The new 2023 KTM SX two-stroke models feature electronic throttle body fuel injection for the first time, replacing the transfer port injection (TPI) system introduced in 2017 for the brand's enduro models. KTM Australia told bikesales that the new system is “much more complex” than the original TPI system seen in the EXC range.

A new 39mm throttle body has been added, with injectors positioned for “pinpoint response”. There is also a TPS sensor for better behavior while idle and for the fuel-air mixture, and a cold start mechanism which is the same as the SX-F models.
While the KTM 125 SX and KTM 250 SX return for 2023, the Austrian firm has also added a KTM 300 SX two-stroke model to the line-up for the first time. The 300 SX effectively replaces the KTM 150 SX, which has been discontinued.
Almost every aspect of the two- and four-stroke KTM SX models has been updated for 2023, with “more compact, more durable, and more serviceable” engine packages that feature new cylinder heads for performance gains and a 2-degrees rearward rotation for better centralization.
The bikes also feature a brand-new 5-speed PANKL Racing Systems transmission, while the four-stroke models benefit from a new quickshift function – a first for the motocross industry. The quickshifter allows for slicker up-shifts from 2nd gear onwards, and it can be disabled via a handlebar-mounted switch.
Other standard tech features include two switchable maps (a first for the two-stroke range), launch control (four-stroke only), traction control (four-stroke only), and a new roll-over sensor for large crashes. There is also an hour meter as standard, as well as EFI status and a fuel indicator through the Keihin engine management system.
The WP XACT suspension setup has been refined too, with tool-free adjustments and a new shock that is “shorter and lighter”. The WP XACT AER fork also features a new “hydrostop” for more effective performance and more “bottoming” resistance.
Overall, the 2023 KTM SX models are narrower and feature new aggressive body work and a retro-inspired graphics scheme. The bikes also feature a new frame and mounts, subframe, swingarm, engine repositioning and ergonomics for better dynamics, stability and strength.
The 2023 KTM SX range comprises of the KTM 125 SX, KTM 250 SX, and KTM 300 SX two-stroke models, as well as the KTM 250 SX-F, KTM 350 SX-F, and KTM 450 SX-F four-stroke models. The brand also offers 50cc, 65cc, and 85cc two-stroke mini bikes.
KTM has been hyping up the new range for the last month, with many punters previously speculating on the addition of two-stroke throttle body fuel injection. It's marketing slogan "Nothing Has Changed" is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the brand's continued pursuit of perfection.
Cleverly, the Austrian firm's April Fools joke (in which it changed all its logos to purple) proved to be an early hint, with the new machines integrating streaks of purple in the colour scheme.
Pricing is yet to be announced, but the new 2023 KTM SX four-stroke models are set to arrive on Australian and New Zealand shores in August 2022, while the full-size two-stroke models will arrive in November 2022.
