Last weekend was a huge one for international off-road competition, with three world championships drawing to a close: trials, enduro and motocross.
In trials, Spaniard Toni Bou secured his third successive world championship with a hard fought fourth place at the final round in the French ski resort of Isola 2000, 90km north of Nice and 2000m above sea level.
Heavy rain mid-way through the event made the turned it into a real lottery, as the once dry sections suddenly became incredibly slippery.
Bou's teammate Takahisa Fujinami faired better in the changing conditions and finished as runner up to eventual winner Adam Raga (Gas Gas). This was enough for Fujinami to hold on to third in the championship for the second year in a row.
Jeroni Fajardo (Beta) claimed the last podium place, as Bou finished off the podium for the first time this season.
The final round of the junior title as also held at Isola, with Australians Kyle Middleton and Lewis Nolan 23rd and 24th respectively.
In the penultimate round of the women's world title, Aussies Kristie McKinnon and Lonie Brooke were 15th and 16th, and Michelle Coleman was disqualified.
All three women will represent Australia in the 2009 Trial des Nations in Italy this weekend, while Middleton will be in the four-rider male squad.
In motocross, KTM's Marvin Musquin wrapped up a great MX2 season in Brazil when he ran away with both motos and the world championship.
Italian Antonio Cairoli already had the MX1 title in the bag before the final round in Brazil.
In the enduro finale, also in France, Spaniard Ivan Cervantes (KTM, E3) and Mike Ahola (Honda, E1) joined Johnny Aubert (KTM, E2) as world champions in 2009.
