Racing: Sykes to join Vermeulen at Kawasaki

Team expects big things in 2010 WSBK

The final piece of Kawasaki's 2010 world superbike jigsaw has been put into place, with Yorkshireman Tom Sykes announced as the teammate to Australian Chris Vermeulen.

Sykes name had long been linked with Kawasaki once it was clear he would not continue at Yamaha, and now that it's official he and Vermeulen can set about lifting the competiveness of the works ZX-10Rs, which have been comprehensively outperformed by their Japanese and European rivals in 2009 with Aussie Broc Parkes and the injury-plagued Makota Tamada at the helm.

During his previous world superbike career, 27-year-old Vermeulen racked up 10 race victories and was runner-up in the 2005 championship, while 24-year-old Sykes, made his full-time debut this season, and is currently eighth ahead of this Sunday's final round in Portugal.

"I'm very happy and excited about this. I spoke with Kawasaki and they told me they were prepared to put in large amounts of resources and attention into winning the World Superbike Championship. That is what I want, to challenge and to win races. I know Paul from my time racing in the UK, and I know that he runs a great outfit, and I'm really looking forward to working with the team."
