Chad Reed's 2010 AMA supercross campaign is already in serious trouble, with his second consecutive DNF in Phoenix last Saturday compounded by a suspected broken bone in his hand.
While Suzuki's Ryan Dungey continued his strong early-season form with a maiden open class supercross victory, Reed (Kawasaki) and his arch-rival James Stewart (Yamaha) collided on lap five of the final.
Stewart then soldiered home to finish 15th, while Reed failed to finish yet again, leaving himself a mountain to climb if he is to win his third AMA title.
"We were racing hard and we were racing for a championship where every point counts, as we saw at the end of last season," Reed said. "James went high and I saw an opportunity to pass and took it and we came together end of story. The main focus for me right now is to seek medical advice and understand what sort of injury my hand has sustained.
"That's got to be the priority right now then once I know where I am at I will take a little time to reflect on what happened."
Dungey, who was second in round one behind Stewart, is now a 9pt (47 to 38) championship leader over Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki), with Josh Hill (Yamaha, 35pts) in third.
Villopoto and Hill were also second and third in Phoenix, with Honda duo Ivan Tedesco and Andrew Short rounding out the top five.
The second Aussie in the open final, Michael Byrne, finished last in 20th place.
In the lites class, Kawasaki's Jake Weimer won his second race in a row.
