RACING: Herfoss takes ASBK series lead

Honda man takes round win and championship lead at Wakefield Park’s round two

Penrite Honda’s Troy Herfoss is the new leader of the 2018 YMI Australian Superbike Championship after round two at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn (NSW) from March 16-18.

In difficult conditions – heat and a fierce cross wind – Herfoss shared a win and second place with Yamaha’s Wayne Maxwell around the tight layout, and now leads the seven-round championship on 110 points ahead of defending champion Josh Waters (Suzuki Ecstar, 95), who completed the podium in both races. Maxwell is next on 88 points.

"I'm really happy to be here in Goulburn and to be able to win this weekend at Wakefield Park again," said Herfoss. "We managed to put in a strong lap for qualifying to get pole and then unfortunately I lost race one by 0.031s, but I got it done in race two for the overall.

"It was good to put some clean, fast laps in considering the conditions and it was an incredible feeling to be able to put my head down and break the guys in race two.

“I really feel like I can win this championship if we can be smart and make the right decisions, so today was a good step in the direction we're aiming for."
