Young gun Toby Price has helped steer Australia's World Trophy team into a strong fourth place after day one of the 2009 International Six-Day Enduro at Figueira da Foz in Portugal.
In brilliant sunshine, Price pushed his Kawasaki to 18th outright in the individual standings, and received strong support from Stefan Merriman (Yamaha, 26th outright), Chris Hollis (Husqvarna, 33rd), and Jarrod Bewley (Yamaha, 37th).
Husqvarna's Glenn Kearney is 49th outright, while Kirk Hutton (Yamaha) is 59th.
With each team able to drop its worst result - on day one it was Hutton - Australia is in fourth position, just over five minutes behind the leader France. Finland and Italy are in second and third, with the top three teams already setting a pace the other nations are struggling to keep up with.
America is 18 seconds behind Australia in fifth.
Meanwhile, it was an unmitigated disaster for Australia's four-rider Junior Trophy team, which is languishing in 15th and last position after ISDE newcomer Josh Green (Kawasaki) blew his engine in the penultimate special test, and then Andrew Lloyd (TM) had to allocate extra time at the end of the day to fix his badly damaged machine.
Geoff Braico (KTM, 63rd) and Nick Beattie (Yamaha, 67th) soldiered on for the Junior Trophy cause, with the remaining five days all about chipping away and gaining positions - while trying to stay out of trouble.
The all-Yamaha trio of Jemma Wilson, Alison Parker and Jacqui Jones are fourth in the Women's Cup class.
As well as the World Trophy, France also leads the Junior Trophy and Women's Cup as it attempts to go for a clean sweep.
In the individual standings, French E3 rider Christophe Nambotin (Gas Gas) leads from Finnish KTM pair Euro Remes (KTM) and Samuli Aro. Only 1.60secs separates the trio, with Briton David Knight (Kawasaki) close behind in fourth.
Price is 56 seconds behind Nambotin in his 18th place.
