R1 heads Yamaha line-up

Yamaha has released a complete make-over for its signature R1 sports bike, now in its fifth generation. The machine has little more than its name and intention in common with the predecessor, boasting a new powerplant and frame.

The engine has switched from five-valves per cylinder to four, and features an innovative two-stage inlet tract design which allows varying length induction trumpets depending on where the bike is in the rev range.

While the frame remains a perimeter alloy beam style, it has had a complete makeover and revision of materials.

All up the machine claims 180 horses at 12,500rpm and 113Nm of torque at 11,000 (both without ram-air effect) for a 177 kilo dry weight.

The company's venerable XJR1300 has come in for revision, now featuring fuel injection for the powerplant and a claimed 10 per cent boost in torque. The exhaust has been changed to a 4-2-1 system while the rear suspension has been upgraded to premium Ohlins kit.
