Vespa's classic PX200 two-stroke scooter is to end its run, which began in 1977.
A development of a series of machines that date back to post-war Italy, the PX was last major development of the four-speed manual machines which made the brand famous.
Thet have a reputation for being tough, if a little quirky to ride, and the company still dines out on the story of two of the diminutive machines completing the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1980.
The local importer says the last container has arrived in Australia, priced at $5990 plus ORC, including a two-year warranty.
Parent company Piaggio says the Vespa brand has been identified with a host of Hollywood stars over the years. According to the blurb: Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday were only the first of a long series of international actors and actresses to be seen on the world's most famous scooter. In photo shoots, films and on the set, the Vespa has been a "travel companion" for names like Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress, Geraldine Chaplin, Joan Collins, Jayne Mansfield, Virna Lisi, Milla Jovovich, Marcello Mastroianni, Charlton Heston, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Gary Cooper, Anthony Perkins, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Nanni Moretti, Sting, Antonio Banderas, Matt Damon, Gérard Depardieu, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson.
