Pumpkin shells lead the improvisation race

But they won't fool the police

January 14, 2009

It probably escaped most of our antennas, but a Nigerian law came into force on New Year's Day forcing motorcyclists to now wear helmets.

The only problem is that many riders are not sourcing a traditional lid, instead wearing dried pumpkin shells on their heads to try and beat the new law.

Police in one city have pulled over several riders with "improvised helmets" since January 1.

Motorcycle taxis called "achaba" are popular in Nigeria, and many of the vendors are already up in arms about the law.
