Jed Beaton leads the 2024 Pro MX Championship, Australia's premier motocross series, after claiming the overall win at the second round in Horsham.
The CDR Yamaha rider finished second in the opening moto of the MX1 class behind KTM’s Nathan Crawford, with both riders capitalising on a mistake from leader Luke Clout (Kawasaki) late in the race. Clout ultimately finished third behind Crawford, Beaton, and Kyle Webster (Honda).
Clout was in the mix again early in the second moto before CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris muscled his way up to the front. But both Beaton and Crawford remained in good position and, when Ferris made a mistake, moved into first and second respectively where they stayed for the remaining laps. Kirk Gibbs (GASGAS) finished third.
Beaton as crowned the overall round winner on countback with Crawford second and Gibbs rounding out the podium in third. The result leaves Beaton at the top of the standings, five points clear of Webster and with Crawford another seven points back.
In the MX2 class, New Zealand rider Brodie Connolly (Honda) carded a perfect day with two moto wins to leave him 26 points clear in the title race.
The opening race saw Connolly benefit from a series of opening lap rider pile-ups to take a lead he would never relinquish. Yamaha privateer Bailey Malkiewicz finished second, with Husqvarna’s Rhys Budd crossing the line in third.
Connolly had a trouble-free second moto and led from start to finish, but was pushed all the way by his teammate Noah Ferguson, who was the early leader in race one. The final margin between Connolly and Ferguson was recorded as 0.27 seconds. Yamaha pilot Ryder Kingsford finished the second moto in third place.
At the conclusion, Connolly was crowned the overall round winner, with Budd taking second and GASGAS rider Byron Dennis in third. Ferguson trails Connolly in the title race by 26 points, with Kingsford a further six points back.
The MX3 class was won by Jet Alsop (KTM) who proved consistency is key with a 2-3 result giving him the overall win. Yamaha Koby Hantis entered the round with the points lead and won the opening race before finishing seventh in the second.
Hantis will maintain the points lead in the third round at Gillman, but sits just six points clear of both Kayd Kingsford (Yamaha) and Alsop.
And in the opening round of the MX85 support class (which doubles as the World Junior Motocross qualifier series), it was New Zealand’s Levi Townley, son of former world champion Ben Townley, who claimed victory with an eye-catching 2-1 result.
The third round of the ProMX Championship will be held at Gillman Raceway in South Australia on May 5.
