Product review: DriRider Tour-Tec gloves

This value-packed medium-weight winter glove is perfect for commuting and day-tripping…

Winter seems to have bitten fairly hard in Melbourne this year, so I've been giving these DriRider Tour-Tec gloves a good workout.

Over a daily round commute of 100 kilometres, they provide enough insulation to keep the worst of winter's chills at bay, yet they're light enough to afford easy movement. They're gloves, not gauntlets, after all – so they're ideal for getting around town or for a day trip to the twisties, and they don't take up much space in your back pack, tank bag, pannier or helmet at your destination.

Best of all, they're priced at $109.95 – which to me doesn't seem like a big ask for a waterproof and breathable winter glove, especially when you look at some of the top Euro brands.

They're made in Indonesia – no real surprise there – but the label says they're 55 per cent genuine leather and the quality of construction appears good. No, I haven't crashed in them, so I can't vouch for their protective qualities, and that's how I'd like things to stay…

Should push come to shove, there's padding and extra protection on the knuckles and palms, along with double stitching in high-impact areas.

But they're certainly comfortable, have weathered the odd storm with no problem, and get me to the office in the morning with a good amount of feeling in my digits. That's no small claim on the mornings of late, where the mercury has been hovering around four degrees C…

I like the smartphone compatibility too; the index finger and thumb of each glove works just fine with a touchscreen.

They're what I'd call a 'medium-weight' winter glove, meaning that for long-distance winter touring I'd be looking more to a heavier, full-length gauntlet-style glove or, better yet, the electric gloves that plug into the electric heated jacket I picked up while living in the UK some years back.

However, so far these Tour-Tec gloves are living up to their manufacturer's claims, and for what to me seems like a fairly modest outlay.
