Stage six of the Dakar Rally on January 9 saw Australia's Toby Price (KTM) finish in a superb second place, just one minute 10 seconds behind the stage winner, Helder Rodrigues (Honda). It was the Price's best finish so far in the 2015 edition of the famous rally, which has now hit the halfway mark.
“I caught a bit of dust at first but then I made my way around some of the guys and was in the clear," said Price. "I almost missed a way point at one stage but I turned back and got it. After than I kept motoring along and I didn’t get lost one bit. I was pretty surprised.
"I think the navigation is slowly coming. I think we’re getting the hang of it now. I take my time with it and at the end of the day its better because I don’t rush things. I’m stoked to be at the halfway and to get a good result today.”
Another factory Honda, this one belonging to Paolo Goncalves, was third in stage six from Pablo Quintanilla (KTM) and Stefan Svitko (KTM), while Dakar leader Joan Barreda (Honda) and Marc Coma (KTM) were sixth and eighth respectively.
Barreda extended his lead to over 12 minutes from Coma, with Goncalves in third position. Price is now in fifth, nearly 34 minutes behind Barreda, with Llewellyn Sullivan-Pavey (KTM) the next best Australian in 73rd. There have been 43 withdrawals in the moto section so far.
Saturday, January 10 is a rest day.
