Barring any major travails in today’s final stage near Mackay (Qld), KTM rider Toby Price will retain his mantle as the Australian Four-Day Enduro (A4DE) champion.
Price, 23, from Singleton (NSW), yesterday extended his lead ahead of closest rival, Yamaha’s Chris Hollis, to 56 seconds.
Now Price only has to get through today’s final motocross stage unscathed – which should be a fait accompli for the former junior jumps prodigy – to make sure of victory.
“The track at Gum Valley looks unreal, I haven’t been lucky enough to race there in an actual motocross event... I’m busting to get out there,” Price said. “I built a little bit more of a lead today, so if it doesn’t go to plan tomorrow, just make sure I make it to the finish and close enough within that gap to hold onto that No. 1 position.
“Just cruise along, see what we can do... but I’m definitely looking forward to getting on that motocross track.”
Sitting third in the outright standings is young Tasmanian, 18-year-old Matt Phillips (Yamaha), ahead of Daniel Milner (Yamaha) and Italian world title campaigner Alex Salvini (Husqvarna).
Phillips and Salvini also lead the E3 and E1 classes respectively, while Price is the E2 leader.
Salvini holds a seven-second lead over Yamaha’s Stefan Merriman and, even though he’s in the small-bore E1 class, he has the motocross pedigree – two-time runner-up in the world MX3 motocross title – to be the fastest rider on track today.
