Aussie Dakar Rally winner Toby Price has made a triumphant return to the Finke Desert Race by winning the event for a sixth time over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in the Northern Territory.
The Gold Coast-based Price stole the show once again, and after winning the prologue on Saturday he was the only rider to complete both 260km legs – Alice Springs to Finke on Sunday and return on Monday – under two minutes.
His final winning margin over second-placed Alice Springs local David Walsh was 10 minutes and 19 seconds, with Cranbourne (Vic) rider David Simpson taking the final spot on the podium as the KTM 500 EXC-F dominated at the pointy end of the field.
Kent Collins was fourth, on another 500 EXC-F, followed by Mark Grove on a Honda CRF250R.
“At the finish of the Finke Desert Race 2018, I’m really stoked to come away with the outright win number six to take the record, so it’s been a good time," said Price.
"I can’t thank the KTM team enough, they’ve done a lot of hard work and without them it wouldn’t have been possible. Like I said, I’m just really pumped to get six wins with KTM and they’ve given me so much support every time we’ve been running this race, so it’s cool to top it off for them with another win this year.”
Price took his maiden Finke Desert Race victory in 2010, and then followed up with further successes in 2012 and from 2014-2016.
