Fired-up KTM rider Toby Price has won the second round of the 2011 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in Bulahdelah (NSW).
Galvanised after a tactical error in the opening round which saw him run out of fuel, the defending champion trumped the field in round two’s sprint format, defeating Yamaha’s Chris Hollis and team-mate Jarrod Bewley.
Price won both the E2 and outright categories, marking a historic first national off-road victory for his pre-production 2012 model of KTM’s highly anticipated 350 EXC four-stroke.
“It was pretty disheartening on Saturday after I made a big mistake and got the goggle and fuel lanes mixed up during my pit stop,” the 22-year-old Price said. “But we were able to fight back on Sunday and everything went to plan.
“I’m glad we made up for it and I think I have even more left in me. Giving them a head start in the points should make things interesting, but I know we have what it takes to fight back.”
Price was superb in the sprint format, clean sweeping all five races. His smallest winning margin was 3.533 seconds, and the biggest a resounding 22.352.
Price’s E2 win came ahead of Hollis and Glenn Kearney (Husqvarna), and in E1 Ben Grabham (KTM) came out on top from round one victor Stefan Merriman (Yamaha) and Tom McCormack (Yamaha).
KTM’s Bewley was top finisher in the E3 class, ahead of impressive performances from Yamaha’s Matt Phillips and Husaberg rider Geoff Braico.
