KTM rider Toby Price has successfully retained his Hattah Desert Race crown, easily winning this year’s event near Mildura (Vic) on Sunday, July 3.
Price finished the gruelling eight-lap race in three hours, 47 minutes and 47 seconds (3.47:47) aboard his KTM 450 SX-F, nearly four minutes ahead of local Suzuki rider Warren Smart (RM-Z450, 3.41:35).
Despite the crushing victory, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Price, who had to recover from heavy crash on the opening lap of the race.
“That first lap made it a bit harder for me, coming off and winding myself a bit,” said Price. “I pushed through, so to come out in front by over three minutes was a great result for both the team and I. I’m really happy with this one and everything is feeling positive for the A4DE (Australian Four-Day Enduro) next week.”
Price’s team-mate Jarrod Bewley (450 SX-F, 3.42:26) was third, nearly a minute behind Smart, followed by former motocross gun Cameron Taylor (Yamaha YZ450F, 3.53:04) and Simon Thompson (Honda CRF450R, 3.53:16).
Smart set the fastest lap of the race with a 25:57, while the attrition rate was massive with 88 of the 254 starters failing to finish.
The third member of KTM's crack factory team, Ben Grabham, didn't competer at Hattah after breaking his hand en route to victory in the Finke Desert Race over the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
