Australia’s two-time world Supersport champion Andrew Pitt and world Superbike star Jonathan Rea have been left stunned after a teenage bus passenger waved a meat cleaver at them in Melbourne.
The Age newspaper is reporting that Pitt, Rea and Frenchman Fabien Foret were almost mowed down by a bus in Melbourne's south-east during a ride from the Dandenong Ranges to the city about 1:00pm on February 5.
“(The bus) missed us all by a couple of centimetres, he just about took us out ... he had to be doing it on purpose,” Pitt told radio station 3AW.
Pitt said the bus driver then pulled over and the riders tried to confront the driver.
The driver closed the bus's doors as the cyclists demanded an explanation, at which point Pitt said a teenage passenger, aged between 16 and 18, took a meat-cleaver out of his bag and began waving it about.
"I don't know what society's coming to when kids are carrying meat-cleavers around in their bags," Pitt told 3AW.
At the sight of the weapon, Pitt and his friend left and later called police to report the incident.
Rea and Foret are in town preparing for the opening round of the world Superbike and Supersport titles at Phillip Island from February 24-26. Pitt recently announced his retirement from racing.
