This side of the Isle of Man TT, it's not often you see pit stops in motorcycle racing. But that could change if World Superbike's promotions boss, Paolo Flammini gets his way.
Flammini, the influential CEO of Infront Motor Sports which controls WSBK, has been reported as telling British journalists that longer races are being considered, races that would include fuel and possibly tyre changes.
"We are in the entertainment business," said Flammini when questioned whether the two-race format would be dropped in favour of a single race scenario in 2013, a single race that would be long enough to require refuelling.
Though nothing is in concrete, pit stops would certainly add more excitement to the racing, with good pit stops giving slower riders a fighting chance. There's also the potential for an unbeatable lead to be squandered with a sloppy pit stop.
It would also add to the fatigue factor for riders, who would be under more physical strain during extended races, particular when the weather plays its part.
While Flammini's comments will probably amount to nothing (it would require more than just his desire to push such changes through) the introduction of pit stops could prove to be a novel twist for the World Superbike Championship.
