Piaggio MP3 300 on the way

The mid-sized variant of Piaggio's innovative MP3 has now been increased from 250 to 300cc, and we'll be seeing the updated three-wheeler go on sale in Australia at any tick of the clock for $9990.

The 300cc engine, which features ride by wire technology, delivers 22.5hp and 23.2Nm at the same peak revs -- 6500. That equates to a significant increase in performance over the superseded 250cc engine, which should ensure the 300 is at home in both commuting and touring platforms.

Moreover, on the basis that the 300's power and torque-to-weight ratios are nearly on par with the bigger MP3 400, Piaggio Australia has now decided to only offer one MP3 for sale in Australia - and that gong will go to the 300.

The real performance arm of Piaggio's three-wheeler equation, the Gilera Fuoco 500 (40hp, 42Nm), will also remain on sale locally.

Cosmetically, the only changes between the old and new MP3s are the updated front and rear light clusters on the 300.

The MP3 concept was first launched in 2006, and it was far from the ordinary with two independently sprung, tilting front wheels.

The MP3 treats wet roads, tram lines and uneven surfaces with disdain, produces lean angles and stopping power to leave conventional scooters ashen-faced, and its electro hydraulic front suspension system means that it remains upright even without using the stand.
