Piaggio delivered a windfall
The company has won the contract to supply nearly 18,000 scooters to the Italian postal service, for a tidy sum just shy of $40 millionAnd we thought Honda's contract with Australia Post to supply CT110s was lucrative.
Until now.
News has just reached us that Piaggio is to supply 17,783 Liberty 125 big-wheel scooters to the Italian postal service at a total value of 30 million euros ($A38. 5 million).
The Liberty scooter is produced by the Piaggio Group in a special ‘delivery’ version, with features and accessories designed to make it a practical solution for the postal service. But has it got beefed-up suspension, as most of the posties we’ve seen locally surely harbour ambitions of joining the Nitro Circus troupe? And we imagine the Italians posties would be cut with the same cloth.
Stefano Sterpone, Piaggio Group EMEA and Americas Sales & Marketing VP, said: “We are extremely satisfied about this very important success for our corporate business division. As a result of this award, Poste Italiane will have a modern, comfortable and environment-friendly Italian scooter for use in our city centres.”
In 2011, Honda Australia supplied 2227 CT110s to Australia Post, a slight fall from 2010.
