The penultimate weekend of racing in the 2011 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) in the Hastings Valley (NSW) saw in-form Tasmanian teenager Matt Phillips sweep the field on both days.
On Sunday, Phillips (first pictured) mastered the 6km sprint track in style on his big-bore YZ475, coming home 13 seconds ahead of Ballards Yamaha Off-Road teammates Chris Hollis and Stefan Merriman.
The day before, Phillips only got home by four seconds ahead of Hollis, with Motorex KTM’s Jarrod Bewley (second pictured) in third.
Phillips is now only 13pts (153 to 166) behind Hollis in the overall standings, with veteran Merriman in third (144).
Phillips (E3), Hollis (E2) and Merriman also lead their respective classes.
“I’m stoked to see everyone on the team doing so well,” Phillips said. “It would be awesome if we won the top three... it would be ideal from a manufacturer’s point of view.
“Today (Sunday) I had a few issues. The track was really tough and (Chris Hollis) was right on my hammer. It was just a matter of trying to limit mistakes and trying to deal with the pressure, which was a challenge.”
Defending AORC champion Toby Price (Motorex KTM) was ruled out of the weekend’s action, still recovering from surgery to correct ‘intersection syndrome’ in his arm.
The series finale will take place at Salisbury (NSW) on October 2-3.
