Australia will kick off the 2013 Superbike World Championship, with February 22-24 locked for the season opener at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
It will be the first international event following a full $3 million track resurface, which will commence in early December, 2012.
Riders will be keen to make their mark on the new bitumen, with a new lap record expected to be set if the weather plays its part. The track was last resurfaced in 1998.
The Superbike World Championship has been ultra competitive this year, with six riders and five manufacturers taking victory in the 13 races to date.
A double win to 2010 world champion Max Biaggi at Misano’s last round now has the Italian veteran with a 38.5pt lead at the season midpoint.
He sits on 210.5pts, followed by British duo Jonathan Rea (Honda, 172) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki, 164.5). Despite four race wins, defending champion Carlos Checa (Ducati) sits in fifth spot on 150.5pts after a series of DNFs at Misano, Donington, Miller and at the season opener at Phillip Island.
Tickets for Australia’s opening round of the 2013 Superbike World Championship will go on sale within the next two months. Visit www.worldsbk.com.au for all the details.
