It's time for cheaper dirt bike registration in NSW says major motorcycle insurer InsureMyRide.
The insurance company has put its money where its mouth is, launching a campaign aimed at introducing a dirt bike recreational registration scheme in NSW.
The insurance company is seeking support from the motorcycle fraternity to lend weight to its calls for a more affordable way to register a dirt bike in NSW, and InsureMyRide's Business Development Manager, Luke Smith, is passionate about the issue, highlighting the fact that other states have much specific and cheaper rec reg options.
"New South Wales riders need a lower cost registration option allowing off-road bikes to be used in certain areas like our Victorian cousins," said Smith.
"We have been seeking support from Members of Parliament to sponsor a petition on behalf of off-road motorbike riders in New South Wales. It appears that we secured this support.
"We now need to get a formal petition ready and that petition needs to have more than 500 signatures in support of Recreational Registration in New South Wales" explained Smith.
"This isn't just about possibly saving a couple of hundred bucks on rego, it's about a fairer and ultimately safer system that helps to ensure that dirt-bike owners don't see full registration as barrier to riding off-road."
The insurance company argues that a specific recreational registration for motorcycles that would only be used off-road would be more affordable but more importantly fairer, and in turn would "improve safety by requiring all off-road motorcycles to be inspected as part of the rego process and make it simpler to enforce by NSW Police."
Luke Smith continued: "Our petition needs at least 500 signatures before we can formally submit it to New South Wales Parliament so they can consider it. We need to blitz our 500 signature target to show the politicians there is a real need for this.
"So, if you’re a dirt bike rider, or even if you're more bitumen-based, go to our website insuremyride.com.au, download and print off the petition. Get your mates, your mechanic, or anyone else who has a passion for bikes to do the same," urged Smith.
The petitions need to be returned to InsureMyRide by 30th January, 2011, at the below address:
"Unfortunately petitions to the NSW Government can only be lodged through snail mail," said Smith, and said that riders would be kept up to date with the NSW rec reg proposal.
"The Victorian Recreational Registration Scheme was put in place decades ago – we believe it’s time New South Wales caught up," concluded Smith.
