Jett Lawrence has made history at Ironman Raceway, joining Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart as the only riders to win every race of the AMA Pro Motocross season.
The Australian rider finished 2023 with 22 wins from 22 races, a feat which is known in motocross circles as a ‘perfect’ season.
Only Carmichael (2002 and 2004) and Stewart (2008) had achieved a perfect season prior to Lawrence’s triumph, but all three of those seasons included an extra round.
Hailing from Queensland, Lawrence was barely troubled all year on his Honda CRF450R, with Honda HRC teammate Chase Sexton and Germany’s Ken Roczen providing the only real challenges to the perfect record.
Lawrence wrapped up the 450 championship two weeks’ ago at Unadilla, becoming only the second Australian rider to do so. Chad Reed also won the premier class title in 2009.
At the age of just 20, Lawrence now has five AMA titles to his name, arguably making him the most successful Australian motocross and supercross rider of all time.
To add to the festivities, Lawrence’s older brother Hunter clinched the Pro Motocross 250 championship aboard his Honda CRF250R at Ironman, taking Honda HRC’s season total to five and giving the Japanese brand a clean sweep of both the AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross competitions.
The older Lawrence brother also won the AMA Supercross 250 East title earlier this year, while Jett won the 250 West title and Chase Sexton won the 450 title.
With the 450 and 250 Pro Motocross titles now in the Lawrence household, the pair are the first brothers in history to win both championships in the same year.
Attention will now turn to the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship, which will consist of two playoff rounds and a final, which will be held at the LA Coliseum on September 23. The new competition is based on points earned in both AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross.
Both Lawrence brothers are well placed heading into the playoffs, with Hunter leading the 250 class, and Jett sitting third in the 450 class despite having not contested AMA Supercross on a 450.
