The FIM’s Grand Prix Commission has adopted a fresh approach to its MotoGP disciplinary regulations be rolling out a new penalty point system to address the problem of riders who are repeated warned for dangerous riding or other serious offences, such as assaulting race officials or marshals.
Effective immediately, riders who behave in this way will be awarded penalty points, with cumulative totals being carried through any given racing season. At the end of each season a rider’s points tally will revert to zero. The points can be awarded instead of or in addition to any other sanction deemed necessary.
When any rider amasses four points they will be forced to start the next race from the rear of the grid; when any rider amasses seven points they will be forced to start the next race from pit lane; and when any rider amasses 10 points they will be disqualified from the next event.
It is hoped the system will serve to help hot-head riders to ‘think twice’ before losing their cool and letting their emotions spill over into threatening or even harmful behaviour.
