And now for something totally different... Spanish MotoGP rider Dani Pedrosa was arrested on Saturday, March 31, after getting mixed up in a criminal network that helped people cheat to pass their examination for a boating licence.
According to the Spanish Europapress news agency, the Honda factory racer was among 21 individuals arrested by Spain's Guardia Civil after it swooped on the racket in Valencia.
The organisers behind the scam stand accused of helping people to qualify for the Yachtmaster certification -- the licence required to skipper a leisure boat -- by fraudulent means. The gang apparently supplied its 'clients' sitting the exam with an earpiece, through which the answers to the exam's questions would be relayed. It also provided experienced sailors to sit the exam using fake ID in the name of a client seeking to earn their qualification.
Pedrosa was caught with an earpiece in the police sting, while a number of other earpieces and fraudulent documents were seized. The Honda Repsol Rider, who came fourth in last year's MotoGP Championship, was one of 10 people caught with an earpiece -- seven more were caught with fake ID, while the remaining four were members of the criminal gang itself.
According to international boating news website IBI.com, Pedrosa issued a statement through his lawyer regarding the incident on Monday, April 2. "After taking bad advice I have made an error," the statement read.
Pedrosa was charged and then released; the matter is still under investigation.
