Australia's representation in the opening round of the 2010 Superbike World Championship at Phillip Island o February 26-28 has been whittled back to three, with Broc Parkes breaking the tibia of his right leg in a training accident.
The Newcastle rider will be out of action for six weeks, which means he should be back in the saddle by round two at Portimao (Portugal) from March 26-28.
"I wish Broc all the best for an early recovery; we are waiting anxiously for his return," said Sandro Di Stefano, who is the team manager for Parkes' Italian-based Echo CRS Honda. "Now he has to concentrate on getting back into the best condition as soon as possible.
"This is a false start for us and it complicates our debut. Superbike is a difficult category, where every minor detail must be taken care of. Things like this confirm how much the human factor is one of the elements that can occasionally slip out of control."
After signing for Echo CRS only late in the piece, Parkes has already had to contend with an abbreviated pre-season to develop the CBR1000RR, and now he'll be forced to play catch-up again when he returns to the saddle.
In the meantime, Echo CRS is exploring the possibility of a rider to deputise for Parkes at the Phillip Island opener.
Chris Vermeulen (Kawasaki) and BMW duo Troy Corser and Andrew Pitt will be the three Aussies on the WSBK grid at Phillip Island - unless a local is given the nod to take the place of Parkes.
