Oz Superbikes to showcase juniors

The Australian Superbike Championship will for the first time incorporate a round of the MRRDA junior title when it returns to Sydney Motorsport Park

Rounds four and five of the QBE Australian Superbike Championship will see some of the country’s best young stars strut their stuff when the premier road race titles play host to a round of the MRDDA National Junior Road Championship at Sydney Motorsport Park from August 1-4.

Some 20 rising stars aged between 12 and 16 will take to the track, and will surely be looking to give it their all on the national stage.

According to Paul Edwards, the founder and Chairman of the MRRDA (Motorcycle Road Race Development Association), the title’s inclusion in the QBE Australian Superbike Championship calendar represented an important move forward for the sport in this country.

“It’s great to finally have the juniors back racing in NSW, while running with the Australian Superbike Championship provides great for exposure for both parties,” he said.

“Teams will get the chance to see the talent that is coming up through the ranks first hand and our junior riders will have the chance to see what options are available as they progress their racing careers,” he added.

“As part of their weekend at the Australian Superbike Championship the junior riders will spend time with Team Honda Racing Principal Paul Free, who will talk to them about bike setup and the importance of feedback,” he said.

Phil Harper, the General Manager for International Entertainment Group (organiser and promoter of the QBE Australian Superbike Championship), said the championship was elated to be nurturing budding motorcycle racing talent.

“We are very proud to have the MRRDA National Junior Road Race Championship running alongside the QBE Australian Superbike Championship for the first time,” he said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for these young riders to showcase their talent to the factory teams, media and a wider audience … and we hope we can build on this in the future,” he added.

The juniors will enjoy a 20-minute practice session on Friday, August 2, then practice, qualifying and race one on the Saturday, and races two and three on the Sunday. For more information visit www.asbk.com.au
