As Casey Stoner's grasp on the 2007 MotoGP World Championship edges closer, organisers of the Australian leg of the series revealed that a new grandstand would be erected to cater for the continued strong demand.
The announcement comes just weeks after plans were introduced to expand the four existing grandstands in response to strong early ticket sales.
"With just over four weeks until the country's premier two-wheeled race kicks off, Australians are demonstrating their passion for the sport like never before,” said Drew Ward, CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC).
In previous years, the AGPC has constructed four grandstands around the Phillip Island Circuit - Gardner Straight, Bass Strait, Siberia and Lukey Heights. Each grandstand is made up of a series of modules. Over the past few months, additional modules have been added to what has been constructed in previous years. These grandstands are now full to capacity and further expansion is not possible.
This has led the AGPC to introduce a brand new grandstand - Southern Loop. The new facility will see total grandstand capacity increased by 65 per cent on the number of seats available for the 2006 race.
"While Casey's dominance of this year's championship has given plenty for local fans to cheer, there are two other Aussies producing excellent results," said Mr Ward.
"The construction of a fifth grandstand at Phillip Island will mean an even bigger homecoming reception for our three home-grown MotoGP heroes."
The event's VIP hospitality offering has also been expanded by 30 per sent on 2006 capacity to meet the demand of fans across the country. A VIP ticket starts at just $725 for the entire weekend and is inclusive of a complete food and beverage package. A limited number of VIP tickets remain.
General admission sales show no signs of abating either, with ticket purchases just over 200 per cent up on the same time last year.
The Trackside Campground is now completely full, with only a limited number of sites remaining in the Highside Campground. Organisers are urging those who have not already booked accommodation to use the Catch-a-Coach service to get to Phillip Island. Regular buses will operate over the race weekend from Melbourne City, Monash University, Cranbourne, Geelong and Ballarat.
The 2007 GMC Australian Motorcycle takes place at Phillip Island from 12 - 14 October. For bookings or more information, visit www.motogp.com.au or call Ticketek on 131 931.
