The Australian Grand Prix Corporation recently unveiled Monika Clarke as its official ambassador for the 2012 AirAsia Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, to be held at Victoria's Phillip Island circuit over October 26-28.
Clarke, a professional model represented by the Chadwick agency, says she grew up riding dirt bikes with her brothers on the family farm at Swan Hill, in northern Victoria.
"I'm a real tomboy at heart and I spent most of my childhood bonding with my brothers, riding motorbikes and racing go-karts and old cars in the paddock," Clarke says.
"My first experience on a bike was when I flew off a Pee Wee 50, only for the bike to land on top of me, with the exhaust burning my leg. It wasn't the best start but I've never been someone who backs down from a challenge; I bounced back and have been hooked ever since," she adds.
Now Clarke is now looking forward to getting her road bike licence, and will be attending a Honda Australia Rider Training (HART) learner course in the near future. That experience, however, will be in stark contrast to the one awaiting her at this year's Oz GP, where she is sheduled to complete a hot lap of the Phillip Island circuit behind a man who knows the track better than most -- five-time World Motorcycle Champion, Mick Doohan.
According to the CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Andrew Westacott, Clarke was a logical choice for the position. "Monika immediately impressed us with her passion for motorcycling," Westacott said. "It was obvious from the way that she spoke about her experiences that she was the ideal person to promote what is shaping up to be the biggest Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix ever," he added.
