An official fund has been set up to support Aussie hero Darcy Ward’s rehabilitation following his return to the UK on August 27 after the fall in Poland that has left him without lower body feeling.
Ward was flown from Zielona Gora to London on a private medical flight and has been taken to an undisclosed hospital, where his condition will be re-evaluated in the coming days.
Aussie team manager Mark Lemon says Ward is receiving the best available care. He could have faced a lengthy wait to secure treatment in Briton's National Health Service, prompting his support team to seek private care to speed up his return to the UK. But this comes at a high price.
The speedway world has shown incredible support for Ward since his crash, and Lemon has appealed to the rider’s fans around the world to assist the 23-year-old with his treatment in any way they can by donating online.
Lemon said: “The support Darcy has received since Sunday has been overwhelming. But if there’s anyone who can kindly donate any amount, big or small, we’d be really grateful.
“Private hospital fees come at quite a cost, but we didn’t want to mess about. The money was secondary. We just wanted the best for Darcy and he has got it.
“Many phone calls have gone back and forth across the oceans over the last couple of days to see what we can do.
“As team manager of Australia, I have been speaking with my federation (Motorcycling Australia) and we will do everything possible to assist with Darcy’s rehabilitation. But we don’t know the diagnosis or the extent of the injuries as yet.”
While Lemon understands the fans’ frustration that very little information has been released on Ward’s condition, he echoed calls for the rider and his family’s privacy to be respected as they come to terms with his ordeal.
“There is too much uncertainty and unknowns and it’s over to the family now to publish any information they feel necessary," Lemon continued. "We have to respect their privacy because I wouldn’t wish on anybody what they’ve had to go through over the last four days.
“These accidents are your worst nightmare. But I do know the family are happy to be with Darcy. There is a lot of uncertainty and I feel sorry for the fans that would like to know more. Everyone is deeply concerned for Darcy’s wellbeing, but at this point in time, we just have to sit back, say a prayer and the family will step forward with information when the time is right.”
