Off-roaders bucking the industry trend

As sales begin to wane in the other segments

December 17, 2008

Off-road motorcycles sales in Australia increased in November, defying the downward trend in the other three segments of the market - road, scooter and ATV.

Figures obtained by the BikeSales Network reveal that while off-road sales are still down year-on-year, the dip is now 3.3 percent compared to the 4.1 percent drop recorded at the end of October.

Meanwhile, the ATV market is now only 1.4 percent up on the same period in 2007 (it was 4.1 at the end of October), while road (7.9 versus 10.9) and scooter (9.1 versus 13.4) also contracted in November as the bear market really begins to bite in the two-wheel segment - a malaise that hit the car scene much earlier.

While the total Australian motorcycle market has contracted for the second month in a row, it's still 2.5 percent ahead of where it was last year.

December is always a huge selling season for motorcycle dealers, so if there is a rally - highly likely with the number of runouts in place by the likes of BMW - the market could still finish ahead of 2007, which would be a huge fillip in the current climate.
