The motorcycle racing community is in shock following the death of reigning Finke Desert Race champion Daymon Stokie during a race in Alice Springs on January 27.
Stokie, 28, was competing in the annual Deep Well motocross event when the tragic accident occurred. He suffered traumatic injuries and was treated at the scene by volunteer paramedics before the St John Ambulance critical response unit attended the scene. However, it was too late as Stokie had gone into cardiac arrest.

Formerly from Naracoorte in South Australia before settling in Alice Springs, Stokie won the 2017 Finke Desert Race – the first victory for Yamaha since 1986. He was only the fourth separate winner of the event since 2007.
He said: “It’s been an unbelievable couple of days. “It was a huge relief to get the win and reward the team for a massive effort. “The WR500F was perfect from start to finish and the team did a great job with testing and support me each and every year and it’s great to have them all here with me on such a successful weekend."
Aussie Dakar champion Toby Price has paid his respects on social media: “Such shit and crazy news to hear today and you sit and wonder how and why! RIP Daymon Stokie. It's sometimes the shittest sport in the world with news like this, but in one way you truly went out on top winning everything here in Australia and overseas.
“Many thoughts are with family and friends and we will see you one day mate, start building some sweet tracks up there and we will shred again.”
RIP Daymon.
