A brand-new trike-specific learner license is now available for NSW riders older than 16
years and 9 months. A pre-learner three-wheeled vehicle course, run by Stay Upright, spans over one day with a 7-hour duration and gives beginner or returning riders a new pathway into the world of three wheels.
Completing the course aboard a three-wheel motorcycle will give riders an X125 condition on their license, meaning that they can only ride a trike. Riders with a full two-wheel motorcycle license can ride a trike unrestricted in NSW and other states and territories.
Pre-learner trike riders will complete their training on the new 2024 Can-Am Ryker 600, currently one of two learner-approved three-wheeled vehicles. This comes as part of a new partnership between Can-Am and Stay Upright.
Can-Am North America's Lucas Van Natter hopes the new trike specific learner license will "help boost sales to new entrants in the three-wheeled market".
Currently, the mandatory pre-learner three-wheeled vehicle course will only run at Stay Upright’s training facility in Rouse Hill. Stay Upright's Steve Coppock hopes the training will be offered at other locations as interest in the course increases.
The training establishes a familiarity with a three-wheeled vehicle, correct mounting and
dismounting, parking procedures, safe braking and accelerating, setting up for cornering,
body positioning, blindspot checks, correct use of mirrors and use of the reverse gear. A
helmet and gloves will be provided, and trike hire is available.
Can-Am and Kyburz are currently the only manufacturers selling learner approved three-wheeled vehicles. The Kyburz DXP is purpose built for Australia Post and has a top speed of
45 km/hr. The Can-Am Ryker 600 is designed for road use, and costs approximately
$19,899 ride away.
Coppock disclosed to bikesales that many three-wheeled vehicles from a variety of
manufacturers were put forward to be considered for learner approval, and after strict
selection criteria, only the Can-Am Ryker and Kyburz DXP remained eligible.
Being the sole brand offering a learner-approved three-wheeler which isn't purpose
built for mail delivery, Can-Am is incredibly eager for the trike-specific learner license to rise
in popularity.
To sweeten the deal, Can-Am is offering a full refund for the pre-learner course and trike hire fees ($287), up to $1250 in Can-Am accessories, and a ‘full tank of fuel’ to riders who purchase a new Can-Am three-wheeled vehicle within 3 months of completing the Stay Upright 3 Wheeled Vehicle course.
