The NSW Motorcycle Strategy has been unveiled, which sets out a range of short-term actions and long-term initiatives designed to reduce motorcycle road trauma in Australia’s most populous state.
The document, although aligned with a number of other NSW safety programs, is claimed to represent a tailored approach to motorcycle safety and recognises that motorcycle riding has its own unique set of variables in terms of travel patterns, environmental influences and cognitive demands.
The strategy was signed off by the state’s Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay, and has four main pillars – safe roads, safe people, safe speeds and safe vehicles – which each have their own set of initiatives and actions. Some of the action items over the next three years include:
Investigating effective road environment accident reporting that is available for the motorcycling community;
Reviewing traffic engineering specifications that increase motorcycle safety while balancing road safety requirements for other users;
Educating road safety asset owners to consider motorcycle safety when roads are designed;
Establishing opportunities form road design, engineer and maintenance practitioners to share motorcycle safety expertise;
Undertaking in-depth motorcycle crash study;
Investigating the issue of returning riders;
Disseminating the Motorcycle Handbook to other relevant road users;
Evaluating the NSW Graduated Licensing Scheme;
Investigating safety impacts of measures addressing congestion and motorcycle interactions with the road users (eg lane filtering);
Developing a communication campaign that addresses motorcycle speed-related risks, inappropriate speed and riding to conditions;
Monitoring and reporting on the uptake of anti-lock braking;
Investigating motorcycle crash testing in other jurisdictions and internationally.
New initiatives and actions will be introduced over the balance of the decade, as the NSW government looks to engage key stakeholders under the auspices of an ‘Implementation Working Group’.
