An Australian team will not be sent to the 2010 International Six Day Enduro (ISDE) in Mexico, to be held in November.
Motorcycling Australia (MA) announced the decision today after consultation with a number of parties, including the Australian embassy in Mexico, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and riders.
"Australia has a long and proud history of supporting the ISDE, which has made this decision all the more difficult," MA CEO David White said.
"In addition to consulting with government groups, MA has also taken advice from other sporting codes in relation to athlete and team security.
"A number of Australian riders and support crews have expressed their concern for sending Australian teams to the event, with some withdrawing their names from the selection process.
"Unfortunately this decision could not be held off any longer due to the pressing nature of logistical issues in relation to transport and freighting if teams were to participate."
It's unclear what the specific safety and security issues arise out of competing in Mexico, and the country is currently not listed by DFAT as a place where travellers should stay clear of.
Australia has always been a huge supporter of the ISDE, which is the oldest off-road event on the FIM calendar. Australia has even hosted the enduro showpiece twice: in 1992 and 1998.
