Nicky Hayden seriously injured in bike crash

Was hit by a car while cycling in Italy and is now on life support

America's 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden is in a grave condition with head and chest injuries after he was hit by a car while he was riding a bicycle along the Rimini coastline in Italy on Wednesday, May 17.

Hayden was spending time in Italy following last weekend's world superbike round at Imola, where he competed on the factory Honda.

The latest update from his hospital is that Hayden's "clinical condition remains extremely critical." The statement continued: "The young man, who is still in the intensive care unit of Cesena’s Bufalini hospital, has suffered a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage."

Hayden's fiancé Jackie and Honda WorldSBK team personnel are by his side, as well as his mum Rose and brother Tommy who have flown in from America.

More updates will come as soon as they are announced.

Hayden, 36, is a three-time MotoGP winner, and his crowning glory came in 2006 when he won the championship ahead of Valentino Rossi.

He joined the WorldSBK title in 2016 with Honda, and won his one and only race at Sepang en route to fifth in the championship. This season has been tough for the garrulous 'Kentucky Kid" as he and teammate Stefan Bradl have struggled with the all-new CBR1000RR SP2.
