Next week (March 6-9), Bikesales will head north from its Melbourne base to sample two new Triumphs – the Street Scrambler and Bonneville Bobber.
The pair continues Triumph's complete overhaul of its heritage range, with Bikesales having ridden the Street Twin, Thruxton R, T100 and Street Cup (both here) over the last 12 months.
The Street Scrambler was launched at the 2016 EICMA motorcycle expo in Milan and is based on the Street Twin, including the same 900cc 'High Torque' liquid-cooled engine with a 27-degree firing interval.
The Street Scrambler shares some bits and pieces with the popular Street Twin, including the fuel tank, brakes and LED taillight. After that they go in separate directions, with the Street Scrambler adopting off-road esque styling with its high-mounted exhaust, one-piece handlebar, fork gators and bash plate. It gets dual and adjustable rear shocks, rolls on a 19-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear, and features racing-inspired side-mounted number plates.
The Scrambler offers a level of technology not seen before on what is arguably the pioneer of the modern Scramblers, including switchable ABS and traction control. It employs a torque assist clutch as well as a USB charging socket under the seat.
A practical addition is the ability to convert the bike between single and two-up riding duties with removable pillion pegs, while the pillion seat pad can be swapped for an aluminium rack.
It may have been handy riding the Street Scrambler instead of the Street Twin when this happened:
Bonneville Bobber
Based on the Bonneville T120, Triumph says the model "encapsulates the minimalist stying principles, muscular stance and purposeful engineering attitude of a genuine bobber."
That means the new machine scores a single seat, wire-spoked wheels, flat bars and the absolute minimum of bodywork, along with hardtail lines to really look the part, emulating the original bobbers of the 1940s.
It doesn't miss out on much when it comes to technology, either, the model featuring a ride-by-wire throttle, a torque-assist clutch, switchable traction control, LED taillight, engine immobiliser, trip computer and selectable ride modes.
Bronze 1200HT engine badges complement signature Triumph badges, brushed engine covers, a branded locking fuel cap and satin and graphite handlebar risers.
The aluminium-pan solo seat can be moved up and forwards or down and back to tailor the riding position, while the engine gets a Bobber-specific twin airbox setup with two filters, a unique intake and a new output shaft.
The Bobber rolls on Avon Cobra rubber, its wire-spoked rims measuring 19in by 2.5in up front and 16in by 3.5in at the back.
As you would expect, the Bonneville Bobber is launching with a comprehensive raft of factory accessories – over 150 of them, in fact. Spanning bar-end mirrors to apehangers, a comfort seat to a cruise control kit, there's a heap on offer to change the Bobber's look, functionality and performance.
Bikesales will bring you a full review of both motorcycles, which are already on sale in Australia for $15,900 (Street Scrambler) and $18,000 (Bonneville Bobber).
