Mobile GPS navigation specialist TomTom unveiled a new motorcycle-specific system at its Amsterdam (Netherlands) headquarters on February 14, 2013, the manufacturer promising the new device will give motorcyclists “the freedom to choose the way they want to ride”.
A product of extensive market feedback, perhaps the biggest standout feature of the new GPS is its ability to tailor a route to suite the rider’s mood – from the quickest point-to-point journey, to the most scenic, to a personalised route of their own choosing. The ‘Winding Roads’ feature, for example, allows motorcyclists to choose the route to any given destination that has the most bends.
Riders can create their own routes using ‘Tyre’ interactive software on their PC, before uploading the route to their TomTom Rider. These routes can be then be shared with other similarly equipped riders via Bluetooth.
The TomTom Rider can feed audio commands direct to a user’s helmet via Bluetooth and it comes with a new 4.3in glove-friendly touch-screen, while a new charging dock turns it on or off in sync with the bike’s ignition.
The TomTom Rider also comes with free lifetime maps, meaning owners can download four or more full map updates each year for the life of the product.
Australian pricing and an on-sale date is not yet available, but as the unit is already available in Europe it can’t be too far away – check with TomTom's Australian website (www.tomtom.com/en_au/) for updates.
