Andy Strapz has recently developed a range of pannier supports to suit the popular Expedition Pannierz and he's just finished the system for the new 800 Triumph Tigers and redeveloped the sets for the KLR 650.
Andy maintains that hard box frames are ok but because they're designed to sit the boxes vertically they don’t support soft panniers as well as they could. As the weight of the Pannierz is taken across the seat, these frames can afford to be much lighter, a set typically weighs between 1.6 and 2kg.
The new frames are made exactly to suit Andy's Pannierz. They cant out from the vertical at the bottom to give better support whereas hard pannier frame sets are vertical, being designed to clip boxes onto. Soft Panniers of all kinds need angled support for the best result.
The frames are manufactured from mild steel tube so that they can be fixed in out-of-the-way places with basic tools.
The frame sets are made to look like they belong to the bike, they're powder coated and come complete with all spacers and bolts.
Andy tells us he has sets to suit most modern adventure bikes and the KLR set is made to swing away for airfilter service. The frrames are available on line and they retail for $350.
